australian PLACES...great weekends away in Victoria

accommodation review

WAVES

PORT CAMPBELL

This is the place to stay if you want to enjoy excellent accommodation and food with only a few metres separating the two.

In the heart of Port Campbell’s main street shops and close to the beach, Waves was the first trendy cafe-restaurant and accommodation establishment on this iconic part of Victoria’s coastline. It is family owned and operated and I've visited a few times since it opened several years ago.

There are seven top quality guest rooms, three up and four downstairs, five of them have king beds and double spa – these, and the separate showers, are open plan in the large guestrooms. The idea is to take a loved one and have a romantic interlude, so grab a bottle of champagne and enjoy.

The layout of Waves keep the guest rooms away from Port Campbell's main street and the restaurant, with each room having a private balcony and a glimpse of garden courtyard or over rooftops towards the sea. They're spacious, bright, and decorated in the colours of sand and sea. While I haven't stayed here to date, my guess is the rooms would be quiet and private. They all have airconditioning, tv, vcr and cd player, and have been well maintained.

Apart from comfortable rooms, the drawcard at Waves is the restaurant. Open for breakfast from 8am, lunch and dinner seven days a week, it’s still considered the best eatery in town (despite some healthy competition these days) and has a good menu – always fresh fish of some sort, very tempting after spending the day gazing at the picturesque briny. Best of all, you can even have room service!!!

Main courses start at around $20. Full cooked breakfast bacon and eggs with the trimmings costs $15 - on sunny mornings, tables on the outside deck are the go. The restaurant has been mentioned favourably over the years by The Age Good Food Guide for its hearty breakfasts on the sundeck, and seafood dinners by the fireplace. Good expresso, licenced. Off-street car parking for guests. Check-in is through the restaurant.

Last visited October 2007. Guest rooms and restaurant in good shape (food sampled too!).

It's worth spending at least three days exploring this part of the Great Ocean Road, and Waves at Port Campbell makes a terrific base if you want to "stay in" for dinner.
