Port Campbell was, for decades, a quaint fishing village on the rugged Great Ocean Road literally a stone’s throw from the Twelve Apostles, and a place for afternoon tea or an icecream before driving onwards or returning home.

Not any more. The last few years have seen a remarkable change in town and there's now some remarkably good accommodation and eateries. It means viisitors can stay in comfort for a couple of nights in the most dramatic and rugged part of the Great Ocean Road, close to the Twelve Apostles (bottom photo) and Loch Ard Gorge and the grossly underrated scenery of the Bay of Islands.

One of the smaller, more exclusive accommodation options here is Shearwater Haven, a delightful B&B perched high on a hillside overlooking the scenic hinterland and well located just two minutes from Port Campbell's centre.

The modern house is architect designed and purpose-built as a home plus guest wing, and with just two B&B rooms it’s perfect for solo couples or two couples travelling together. It's also ideal for those wanting quiet, private accommodation with the luxury of cooked breakfast served to them before a day's exploring.

I first met hosts Christine and Hans several years ago when reviewing for another guide book. They are warm, amiable hosts with a great love of the region.

Shearwater Haven's two guest bedrooms have recently been remodelled and refurnished to provide an even better guest experience. Bedroom one (second photo) now has the option of exclusive use of the sitting room (third photo) which has kitchenette, fridge, tea and coffee making, dining table, and couches, overlooking a beautiful expanse of landscaped gardens and the country beyond.

The other bedroom, a little larger, has it's own entrance from a side deck and it has been set up brilliantly.

Both guest bedrooms have a queen bed, ensuite bathroom, tea and coffee making, airconditioning and in-floor heating. Good toiletries and quality linen of course, and the rooms are sparkling clean and fresh. Ample off-street parking.

Many native birds, including the rare rufus bristlebird, can be seen in the garden - in fact, about 160 species have been logged here, attracted by the beautifully maintained gardens and its well-established native shrubs and trees.

Breakfast, served in the sunny conservatory, is a hearty spread of fresh juice, cereals, preserves and toast, poached fruits, bacon and eggs any way, plunger coffee and tea.

Hans and Christine have lived here for many years and willingly share their knowledge of the Shipwreck Coast and the new scenic gourmet loop. My advice is: stay at least two nights here - it's very reasonably priced and there's so much to see along the iconic 12 Apostles coastline.

Last visited in October 2007. I have no reservations about recommending this B&B.
