GLEN ISLA HOUSE

COWES, PHILLIP ISLAND

This is the Island’s best accommodation and it’s about time such luxury was imposed upon Cowes… but as they say, miracles take a little longer. Glen Isla has all the elements that make a short break from the rat-race seem like a holiday – supremely comfortable (chic but not too glitzy) ensuite guest rooms, refined dining, acres of landscaped heritage gardens, a touch of history, a short stroll to the beach, and friendly hosts knowledgeable in the island’s attractions – don’t miss the Penguin Parade, koalas and Churchill Island heritage if you have the time and the inclination.

For a romantic getaway Anderson Cottage (pictured at left) is the ultimate private escape – a spacious gabled cottage with four-poster bed, gas-log fire, spa bath and champers in the fridge. There’s also a two-bedroom self-contained cottage, the Gate House, which is ideal if you want to cater for yourselves.

House guests have a lounge and dining room where breakfast is served at a civilized hour (ie. at a time of your choice), and, if you have a group together, staying for 3-course dinner is highly recommended since Glen Isla boasts a host with the most - Ian went back to school and is now a fully qualified chef. Complimenting the dining experience is an extensive wine cellar.  Even breakfast is a delicious work of art  - stay the weekend and try it for yourselves.

My last stay here was in April 2007, and I found Glen Isla House in good shape. Apart from an excellent breakfast, top guestrooms, good hosting and lovely gardens, I like being able to stroll down the bushy lane to the beach for an early morning walk.
