Those looking
for a cosy weekend cottage not too far from the city will find Athlone
Country Cottages ideal. There’s a choice of three luxurious self-contained
cottages on a beautiful stretch of farmland a few kilometres from
Alexandra - two have two bedrooms each and face a trout-stocked
lake; the third cottage is trendy studio style (top 2 photos, left) with a scenic mountain
outlook.
All cottages present extremely well and have everything you'd possibly want for a relaxing weekend away. Those bits and pieces and appliances
expected of modern kitchens and bathrooms are all there, the cottages are spotlessly clean and comfortably furnished
in modern country style.
One nice
touch (of many) - if you arrive on a chilly evening the lights will be on and
the wood fire burning, making a warm country welcome. A full breakfast
hamper is supplied each day - more than you could eat for a weekend! Athlone is
a perfect place to learn the gentle art of fly fishing. Hosts Jenny
and Joop regularly organise on-site professional fly-fishing tuition
for guests – all equipment supplied including trout in the lake.
If that sounds too hard, try the string and meat trick for some yabbies.
Alexandra
is a popular destination for those wanting to escape to a small provincial
town in beautiful countryside. It has historic buildings, interesting
shops, country pubs, cafés and crafts; it’s close to
Lake Eildon and Goulburn River for fishing, and bushwalkers can meander
Fraser National Park’s numerous forest trails.

Maroondah Hwy; about two hours drive
